boardgames
We had a long Saturday, going to [info]rillaith's games party. We drove over on Saturday morning, and seemed to arrive at about the right time as people were finishing breakfast.

Soon we got some games going. I joined in 'Primordial Soup' (Ursuppe), which involved creating hungry amoebas and trying to give them a genetic advantage. I enjoyed this - it was relatively straightforward to pick up (as long as we followed the cheat-sheet), but seemed to have lots of possible strategies to think about, along with the trade-off of whether to reproduce or specialise more. I led the scoring for much of the game but was overtaken in the last couple of turns :-/

Next I tried 'Shadows over Camelot', which is unusual in that (most of) the players are cooperating to try to beat 'the game'. It involves being a knight and going on quests, which you do by playing cards. But meanwhile each player also has to do a bad thing each turn to represent the evil forces. It turned out to be more difficult to win than I expected - in the end we thought we had just managed it, but there turned out to be a traitor in our midst, who turned it into a loss!

We managed to try a few games of 'Tsuro', which [info]rillaith gave me for my birthday. We'd only played it with [info]theora and me before, and it was a bit quicker and more interesting with more players. I'm still not sure if there is much in the way of strategy to it, but it is amusing nonetheless.

Later I joined in some games of 'Bang!', which appealed as it is a 'spaghetti western shootout' card game. Alongside cards saying 'bang!' and 'missed' for shooting, there are various guns and special events, plus of course beer for healing. It uses an interesting mechanic where the 'range' to shoot someone is the number of seats away from you they are sitting when playing.

After dinner there was a big game of 'Apples to Apples', which I won!

It didn't seem like much time had passed but suddenly it was late and we had to head for home. It's not so bad driving when the roads are mostly empty though.

Was nice to see you. I liked the look of Tsuro very much, and may well pick myself up a copy when I next see it.
