Norwich - Saturday
At the weekend we went to visit Norwich - it was my birthday treat from
theora. We left home a bit worried due to the PC failure, but managed to put it aside after a while.
We had a pleasant ride up on a fairly empty train. As it neared Norwich station we passed the football ground, so we decided to make that our first visit. They were playing away, so it was quiet, but we looked in the store and got a t-shirt as a memento.
Next we wandered into the city along the historic King Street, and chanced on a museum called 'Dragon Hall', which looked interesting, so we did the tour. It was an impressive medieval merchant's hall.
By the time we'd finished the museum, it was time for lunch, so we went to find a pub near our hotel called the Wig and Pen. It was a nice relaxed pub, with a selection of real ales, and we had huge sandwiches while watching some football.
After lunch we checked into the hotel, then headed into town to find the Colman's mustard shop for some more souvenirs. Another aim of visiting Norwich was to try some more pubs from the 'Good Beer Guide', and for the next ones we had a bit of a walk out of the centre.
The Fat Cat was a pub like no other - it's the only pub to have won 'CAMRA Pub of the Year' twice. They had some huge list of real ales both on handpumps and being served from the casks in a back room, and this was apparently nothing special. There was also a constant stream of people coming to get takeaway cartons of ale. We tried a few ales and some Norfolk cider before deciding to move on.
The Alexandra Tavern was by contrast just a local neighbourhood pub, but they had a selection of real ales so we stayed for a drink, before heading back into the centre of town. Having had plenty of beer and not feeling very inspired, we went to the La Tasca near the hotel for dinner, making it only a short stumble back when we had finished.
